Tim Allen

Department: Psychology

Rank: Assistant Professor

Research Interest: The overarching goal of the lab is to understand the contributions of circuits connecting the hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex to memory and memory-based action selection. Importantly, the connections between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex are known to be abnormal in several mental health disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and ADHD), yet the exact nature and range of connectivity irregularities remains unclear. Our goal is to understand the cellular and circuit mechanisms of cognition and behavior within the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex system and advance knowledge critical to translational goals in mental health issues.

Using prospective research studies, he examines the ecological risk and protective factors for externalizing behavior problems among this population at the individual, family, peer, and community levels. In addition, he evaluates clinic and school-based psychosocial intervention models that target impairments associated with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and externalizing behavior problems among children and adolescents.

Changwon Yoo

Department: Biostatistics, Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work

Rank: Associate Professor

Research Interest: Dr. Changwon Yoo’s research group, Statistical Machine Learning Group (SMLG), has state of art servers to develop and disseminate innovative statistical methods for Big Data Analytics (BDA).The group’s research draws from statistical machine learning, genomics, and neuroscience and seeks to identify and build statistical methods in big data such as genomics, proteomics, neuroimaging, and clinical data. His research is highly collaborative because understanding diseases mechanisms and coming up with better treatments and prevention in medicine and public health inevitably involve analyzing complex and big data. He is currently a PI in an NIH grant to build a novel computational causal model of key genes interactions in Brain Cancer development. Through SMLG, Dr. Yoo has supported 15 undergraduate and graduate students and is currently supporting 2 Undergraduate, 2 Master’s and 4 Ph.D. students.

Interested in becoming a NIGMS RISE Faculty Mentor?

Thank you for your interest in the NIGMS RISE program! We are always delighted to add faculty as mentors to our program! As you know, the purpose of the FIU NIGMS RISE program is to enhance the research environment at FIU and increase the interest, skills, and competitiveness of students in pursuit of biomedical research careers. The goal of this program is to stimulate interest among underrepresented students in continuing on to a career in biomedical research and thereby increase the number of underrepresented minority scientists engaged in biomedical research. The main focus of the RISE program is the student research training effort which takes place at designated laboratories of approved NIGMS RISE mentors. This ‘Student Research Experience’ provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to receive compensation while acquiring work experience in research labs.

In order to be considered for NIGMS RISE mentorship status, all new potential mentors should submit the following two documents:

  • Biographical Sketch (most updated; here you will find Biographical Sketch Example)
  • Most updated CV or Resume
  • Commitment Letter
    • Should be addressed to NIGMS RISE Advisory Board and no more than 2-3 pages
    • Describe your research and the research project in which the NIGMS RISE fellow will be participating
    • State your mentoring history/or experience working with underrepresented students in a research environment (including current and past students); You have an active research program in the area of _________; You have agreed to mentor students and provide them with a research training opportunity in your lab as well as assume the responsibility of providing instruction to your students in appropriate techniques, etc.
    • Include relevant and available resources – equipment/material, funding support, laboratory & office facilities, location, etc.
    • Please be sure to use FIU letterhead

Kindly email the above-mentioned three documents to the NIGMS RISE Program Coordinator, Courtney D. Aiken at coaike@fiu.edu. Each potential new mentor’s packet will be reviewed and approved by the FIU NIGMS RISE Advisory Board.

Once again, thanks so much for helping promote the FIU NIGMS RISE program at FIU!
